From a long gone era this exotic piece of art takes you back to a time when skilled artisans plyed there trade without the burden of mass production (but with crap remittance).
You must wonder whether the patterns have a specific story or symbolise a part of their lives.
You can see the rivets used to hold the door together on inside bent over as well as the heads on the outside.
To make the transition from old to new, we made a pediment or doorheader by routig three seperate pieces of timber then glueing and nailing them together.

Hi Jamie,
ReplyDeleteWhat an absolutely gorgeous door! You have a real treasure. I'm happy to learn the Howard products are available in your part of the world, and that you had success in rehydrating this piece of art. Is this your front exterior door, or an inside door? It's amazing how much the wood will "drink", isn't it?
Thanks for sharing,
Suzanne

Hi Suzanne,
DeleteYes this is the front door. All I basically did was brush on the restor-a-finish and let it soak in.
Thanks Jamie
